The Biblioburro- The Donkey Library, Columbia:
The Biblioburro is a traveling library atop of two donkeys, who is ran by 39 year old primary school teacher, Luis Soriano, his wife, and three children in La Gloria, Colombia. Luis and his two donkeys, Alfa and Beto, bring books to children of rural Columbia every Saturday. Luis started this library with just 70 books. Now a decade later after donations, the library has 4,800 books in it's collection. The Biblioburro is operated inside of the Soriano home. Soriano does the absolute best he can in the conditions he has to work in including not having enough space to fully display all his books. Luis and his family are working on building a separate library from donated funds they have received. The library is a stain on the family financially. Luis' wife had to open a small restaurant just to make ends meet. But through all their struggle, Luis and the family's goal is to bring the "gospel of education" to the educationally starved children of Northern Columbia. The inspiration for creating his library came from Soriano own childhood experience where he grew up in poverty and violence. He hopes that through providing these books and educating children, that the next generation of this troubled country can transform it into something great.
